Top 5 Scary Sports Injuries
Top 5 Scary Sports Injuries
By guest author: Heidi Mills
We've all seen them on television; those injuries that make you squirm as the player writhes around in agony! With Halloween coming up....here's our list of the scariest sports injuries. They may not be the worst, but these are the most common injuries which scare both the player and the spectators!
5. Olecranon bursitis
Olecaranon bursitis is also sometimes known as student's elbow. It is an inflammation of the bursa which sits at the tip of the Humerus bone at the elbow. This can occur as an overuse type injury from excessive leaning on the elbow (hence student's elbow). It can also occur from a direct impact to the elbow - and this is the scary part! This can swell up, almost instantly, to be the size of a large egg, causing quite a shock to the player and spectators alike!
4. Achilles tendon rupture
The Achilles tendon is the thick band which attaches the calf muscles to the heel.A ruptured Achilles is a pretty common injury in both sports and everyday life. The scary thing about it is the noise it can make. This has often been described as sounding like a gunshot! Imagine hearing a noise that loud from your ankle!
3. Shoulder dislocation
Shoulder dislocations are pretty common especially in contact sports such as rugby. Dislocations which do not instantly reduce (pop back in) usually result in deformation at the shoulder. This can be quite a scary sight! The head of the Humerus (upper arm bone) can protrude out forwards, backwards or even underneath into the armpit!
2. Open fractures
An open fracture is a break in the bone where the end of the bone breaks the skin and protrudes through. As you can imagine (unless you have been unfortunate enough to see one), this can look pretty gruesome as the limb may looked deformed and, unlike the other injuries in this list, there may be a fair bit of blood!
And at Number 1:
1. Ankle fracture/dislocation
This injury (or really a group of injuries) occur frequently from bad (often two footed) tackles in football (soccer). What may happen is a fracture of both the Tibia and Fibula (lower leg bones).
Alternatively, a dislocation may occur, which is when all three main ligaments at the ankle (anterior talofibular, calcaneofibular and posterior talofibular) are ruptured. This results in the foot bones being unattached to the lower leg bones, other than the support of the surrounding tendons. This results in a very unstable joint.
The reason it is at the top of this list? Just have a look at the injuries sustained in the Premier League by players including Aaron Ramsey, Cisse and Eduardo to see the lower part of the limb bent in all directions and in some cases wobbling around freely! If you do decide to look, just make sure you have a strong stomach!

Youth Sports Coach - Watch What You Say
Youth Sports Coach - Watch What You Say
By guest author: Nick Dixon
Volunteering to coach youth sports can be one of the most rewarding experiences in your life. It is a privilege to spend time teaching, coaching and mentoring youngsters in one of the most critical stages of their mental and physical development. Many kids do not have positive role models in their life. Many kids do not get the attention and the discipline that they need and desire. The main thing I want to discus today is the importance of thinking before you speak and the fact that your words greatly affect the self esteem of your players. Many coaches fail to remember that what a coach says can have long term positive or negative effects on a player. All youth coaches should remember these points regardless of which sport that they coach.
What you say can have long term positive or negative effects on a player. It is a coach's job and responsibility to see, identify, and correct bad player habits, mechanics and incorrect actions and behavior. Coaches should use an approach in such times that is constructive and that produces positive results. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a coach verbalizes displeasure when a player does something wrong as long as it is done professionally and compassionately. What is most important is that if you tell a player when something is done wrong, always make a point to tell that player as soon as possible positive feedback praising something that the player does right.
Maintaining a balance between correction and praising is one of the greatest attributes of a good youth coach. Coaches should always take a moment and think before they speak what is on their mind. Sometimes coaches say something that they wish many times over, that they had not. Once you say something to a player, the damage is done. Regardless of what you do or say, that child will always remember the hurt and embarrassment. Words of praise build confidence and self esteem. A coach's words of praise and kindness are sometimes the only positive words a player hears outside of school and church.
3 Important Points to remember:
1. Praise Every Player at Least Once Every Day - Kids look up to you. They hear every word that you say. They take every word that you say to the "heart". Always strive to find a reason to praise every player at least once or more during every game or practice. Don't make it false praise because kids are too smart. They know when you are sincere or not sincere in your praise.
2. Maintain a Healthy Balance - Make sure that when you correct a player for poor execution of a skill, drill or action, that you praise that player later when a job is well done. If all the kid hears are negative comments one right after another, that kids is going to eventually "tune you out". Keep a healthy balance between your words of correction and your words of praise. Maintaining a positive attitude and a positive approach when correcting bad execution requires a high level of patience. Patience is another valuable attribute of good youth sports coaches.
3. Maintain Your Composure - Think Before You Speak - You can never take words back. Once they are said, they are said! Take a minute to think before you speak when you are irritated and displeased. Words spoken out of anger often come out wrong and have the opposite effect on a player or team than you wished for. If you want your team to play and perform with composure then you must be an example or role model. If you "lose it" every time something goes bad then why should your players not do the same. Be calm and composed at all times. Players and teams emulate the behavior of their coach. If he is calm and collected when the pressure is on, they will tend to be also.
I hope that you find this article useful and informative. Good luck to you and your team, Coach Nick Dixon.

Difference Between a Good Coach and Bad Coach
Difference Between a Good Coach and Bad Coach
By guest author: KH Lee
Coaching is a big business because everybody wants to be successful, and to be successful you need a coach. Coaches are there to push you out of your comfort zone but pull you out of the danger zone. Some public speakers call themselves coach because they give a 2 day seminar and 1 out of 200 of the participants become successful while the rest of the 199 go back and tell their friends and family how good they felt.
A good coach goes deep and close-up. A bad one goes broad and distant.
A good one will bring you along. A bad one asks you to go yourself.
A good one will share his/her teachings with you only. A bad coach will sell it to many people.
A good one helps you get where you want to be. A bad coach helps you get where he/she wants you to be.
A good one always tells you the bad things first. A bad coach always tells you the good things only.
A good one will ask you to come to him/her only when you have a problem. A bad coach will ask you to come to him/her only when you succeed.
A good one calls himself/herself a friend of yours. A bad coach calls you a student of his/her.
And if there's anything else, a good coach will not call himself a good coach.
If you ever consider success coaching as a career, forget it. You're probably doing it already. Because you are able to coach anyone to success anywhere, not just in a seminar or classroom. If you have children, coach them first. If you have siblings, coach them only if they allow you. If you have friends doing poorer than you, help them first. They will be the ones writing your testimonial as a good coach because you treat them as a friend instead of another paying customer.
Do not touch those who do not like to be touched. Only touch people who want to be touched. Only teach people who want to be taught. Only share with people who want to give. Once you've helped the people you know, you will have a very big marketing force for your coaching business. Only then can your business can start running and money can start flowing. Money only comes when enough value is given. So start giving now.
Repeat these steps, and one day you will have a successful coaching career.

Female HS Math Teacher/Cross Country Coach Accused of Sex With Male Student
Female HS Math Teacher/Cross Country Coach Accused of Sex With Male Student
A former Clarinda High School math teacher was sexually involved with one of her students for several weeks – if not months – according to statements collected by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. The statements were included in documentation investigators used to get search warrants last week.
The teacher, Suzette Reed, resigned her teaching position earlier this month. Prior to her resignation, Reed told Clarinda High School principal Theresa Nook that she had sexual relations with the former CHS senior beginning in early July, after the then-17-year-old student had graduated, according to the report by DCI Special Agent Daniel Dawson.
A female student told Dawson, however, “it was common knowledge amongst the student body Mrs. Reed and [the student] were having a sexual relationship,” during the last six months of the 2009-10 school year. Reed’s husband, Robert, told the investigator he was aware of a sexual relationship between his wife and the former student.
In searches conducted Friday, investigators collected several cameras and computers, photos, cards Reed had sent to the student, cellular phone bills and bedding. The materials were taken from Reed’s home, the student’s home, Reed’s mother’s home and Reed’s car.
Robert Reed, a Clarinda police officer who is currently deployed with the Iowa National Guard for training for deployment to Afghanistan, told Dawson that the student had been coming to the Reed’s home “once or twice a week for over six months to receive tutoring in math.”
Dawson reported Robert Reed became suspicious and confronted his wife, who admitted to having a sexual relationship with her student that began June 16. The husband also told Dawson he had searched his wife’s personal laptop computer and discovered multiple photographs of the student, including one of his wife and the student lying next to each other in a suggestive pose and appearing to be without shirts.
“Mr. Reed also states since discovery of the relationship, he obtained and reviewed cellular phone records of Mrs. Reed’s personal cell phone back to May of 2010, which indicated Mrs. Reed and [the student] were exchanging a large number of text messages between each other,” Dawson reported.
The investigator’s report stated Suzette Reed was no longer living at the home she had shared with Robert Reed and their two children.

Plant High tennis coach resigns after a scandal breaks over her relationship with student
Plant High tennis coach resigns after a scandal breaks over her relationship with student
By Tom Marshall, Times Staff Writer

TAMPA — A teacher and head tennis coach at Plant High School has resigned, amid a district investigation into allegations that she carried on an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old female student, officials said Monday.
A Tampa police report says Mary Lynn Vu, 31, kissed the student and fondled her through clothing. But she was not criminally charged due to the student's age and what appeared to be the consensual nature of the relationship, police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said earlier this month.
Hillsborough County school district officials had done little more than review that police report and summon Vu for a meeting when they received word of her resignation, said schools spokeswoman Linda Cobbe. So it wasn't clear whether there were grounds for termination.
But the district will forward Vu's file to the state Department of Education for possible sanctions against her certification, Cobbe said.
"Her form will be checked that we would not re-employ her," Cobbe added.
Vu's attorney confirmed her resignation in an e-mail, saying she hoped to make a fresh start and spare her school from the "inevitable distractions" resulting from the incident.
"Despite the detailed investigation of law enforcement and prosecutors that ultimately cleared her name, Mary understands that there will always exist a small but vocal minority that would interfere with her ability to effectively teach this coming school year," said Mark O'Brien of the firm O'Brien Bower. CJ girls basketball coach caught in sex sting
According to FBI, Marc Greenberg sent explicit e-mails to underage females
By Dave Larsen, Staff writer
Updated 11:04 PM Tuesday, May 5, 2009
DAYTON — On Jan. 26, Marc N. Greenberg watched his Chaminade Julienne High School girls basketball team lose to Beavercreek High 56-46.
That same day, someone using the screen name bballguy5555@aol.com started a string of 47 lurid computer chat room conversations with investigators posing as teenage girls.
The conversations became more sexually explicit as time passed “as he persistently suggested and requested that (the investigator) perform sexual acts for his own gratification,” according to an affidavit filed in federal court May 1.
On Monday, May 4, FBI agents arrested Greenberg at his Kettering law office and charged him with 12 counts of violating federal obscenity law. Authorities claim Greenberg used computers at his office and his Centerville home to engage in graphic sexual conversation and to transmit obscene images, including videos of himself masturbating.
Investigators traced the bballguy5555 screen name, as well as the screen name aig2010@aol.com, to Greenberg’s office.
Last month, Greenberg told an undercover investigator posing online as a 13-year-old girl from New York that he had purchased airline tickets to fly there to meet the girl for sex, according to an affidavit filed in support of the federal obscenity charges against him.

Former Tennessee Player/Current HS Football Coach Accused of Soliciting Teen for Sex
Former Pigeon Forge High School assistant football coach and former Tennessee wide receiver Josh Briscoe has been indicted by a grand jury on charges of soliciting sexual exploitation of a minor and solicitation of a minor. According to court records, the charges stem from a text message Briscoe allegedly sent to a 15-year-old student in August 2009.
Briscoe’s attorney, Joe Baker, told the Knoxville News Sentinel the authorities interpreted what were innocent comments in the worst light possible. Baker did not immediately return a call from the Associated Press. Court records show the student received a text that read, “You owe me a lil action for going off like that,” and suggested a sexual favor. A police investigation did not uncover additional improper conduct.

Vallejo Baseball Coach Arrested For Battery On Umpire
VALLEJO, Calif. -- A Vallejo baseball coach was arrested at police headquarters on Tuesday for battery on a sports official during a dispute at a state Babe Ruth League tournament game at Wilson Park on Sunday.
David Daniel Davis, 42, allegedly assaulted the field umpire, who had called one of his players out at first base, police said.
The Vallejo team had rallied from a 4-2 deficit to take a 5-4 lead in the seventh inning of the game against a team from Sonoma, but had to forfeit the game after the alleged assault, the team's manager John Larson said.
The forfeit was the second loss for the team of 15-year-olds and it eliminated them from the eight-team, Northern California Babe Ruth League tournament, Larson said.
Davis went to police headquarters Tuesday to file a complaint against the umpire but, based on eyewitnesses' statements, Davis was arrested for battery, police Lt. Abel Tenorio said.
He was booked into the Solano County Jail on $5,000 bail but is no longer in custody, according to a jail official. The penalty for battery on a sports official is punishable with a fine up to $2,000, up to a year in the county jail or both.

Basketball coach charged with statutory rape, sodomy
Basketball coach charged with statutory rape, sodomy
The Chesterfield Police Department announced Wednesday that warrants were issued charging a local basketball coach with statutory rape and statutory sodomy.
Investigators said Brent Michael Woody, 26, of Creve Coeur, was arrested following an investigation into reports of alleged sexual misconduct by Woody involving two female juveniles.
Woody was charged with 11 counts of second degree statutory rape and four counts of second degree statutory sodomy. He's being held on a $50,000 cash bond.
Police said Woody, who was not a teacher, was employed as a high school basketball coach by a local school district; however the alleged incidents which occurred in 2009, occurred off-site and did not involve school district property.
The Parkway School District released the following statement regarding the former coach at Central High School:
•We have been notified by the Chesterfield Police Department that a former athletic coach at Parkway Central High School may have been involved in inappropriate sexual activity with one or more of our students. We are deeply concerned and are cooperating fully with the investigation.
•During the 2008-09 and 2009-10 school years, the individual served as the ninth grade girls basketball coach and as an assistant track coach at Central High. He did not have a teaching contract with Parkway, but occasionally served as a substitute teacher. Before being hired in the fall of 2008, a federal police background check was completed revealing no previous instances of misconduct. Another federal background check was completed in October 2009 with the same results. He did not seek employment in Parkway for the 2010-11 school year.

Blount County little league coach arrested for attacking umpire
Blount County little league coach arrested for attacking umpire
By JOSH AULT
6 News Reporter
HARROGATE (WATE) - A Blount County little league coach was arrested for attacking an umpire in an incident earlier in July.
Michael Maples, of Maryville, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after deputies say he attacked an umpire.
The alleged attack happened at an all-star game in Harrogate. It was at a ball field on Washington Avenue.
The all-star game was between 11 and 12-year-old boys with Harrogate Little League and Eagleton Little League, which is based in Alcoa.
Before the incident happened, things had already gotten a little out of control at the ball game. "At one point, we had the law come and a couple of people were asked to leave," said Harrogate Little League President Freddie Chumley.
Chumley, who's worked in little league for 23 years, says this was the first time he had to call the authorities to remove people from the crowd.
In the final inning of the game, things escalated, and the head coach for Eagleton was ejected from the game for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Still, what happened next was very unexpected.
"It got down to the last inning. It was tied. One of Harrogate's players stole home. The umpire called him safe. At that point it ended the ball game, and when he turned around to give the official score. He was attacked from behind," Chumley explained.
"It pushed me into a fencing at the backstop and I fell to the ground," said Douglas White, the umpire who was assaulted. "(It) dislocated my right shoulder."
White also received a concussion, and had to have immediate surgery to fix his shoulder.
After the confrontation, Maples left the ball field, and was later arrested.
"It's not indicative as Eagleton as a whole," Chumley said. "It was a small group of people who egged it on and caused it."
Chumley says many of the Eagleton fans apologized for what happened, and have called him to check on White.
"It's just physical injuries to me," said White. "(It's) not something kids need to witness at a ball game."
Maples has been removed from coaching by Eagleton Little League officials. He had been a coach with the league for more than five years.
White, who's a volunteer umpire, is also a full-time registered nurse. He'll be out of work for more than a month.
6 News tried to contact Michael Maples for comment. We were told to contact his lawyer, Joe Costner, but he was unavailable.
Maples posted a $10,000 bond and was released. His first court appearance is July 22.

Ex-Coach Gets Plea Deal In Internet Sex Case
DAYTON, Ohio -- A former basketball coach and lawyer is expected to plead guilty to Internet sex crimes, authorities said.
Attorneys for Marc Greenberg reached an agreement with federal prosecutors for the former Chaminade-Julienne girl's basketball coach to admit that he used the Internet to broadcast sex acts to minors.
People in the Chaminade-Julienne community are happy to hear that there will be a plea and the case will be over.
Michelle Gavin said, "Very surprising with him being an attorney and knowing what he was doing. I;m very sorry for his wife and kids."
Deon Watkins said, " If he did it, I think it's good that he owned up to it and took responsibility for what he did.".
Prosecutors said Greenberg communicated with an undercover agent, which he believed was a 13-year-old girl, directing her to view streaming video from his web camera, showing an adult man exposing his genitals.
Greenberg is a local attorney who led the Chaminade Julienne girl's basketball team to a state title in 2005. He resigned from the coaching job after federal agents arrested him in May of 2009 at his Kettering law office.

Coach Accused of Sex With Girl – James Bruce Valkema
Michigan State Police say 32-year-old James Bruce Valkema of Grand Rapids was arrested on Monday on a five-count warrant issued by the Kent County Sheriff’s Office. Valkema is a Spanish teacher and bowling coach at South Christian High. Investigators say Valkema has been charged with first degree criminal sexual conduct because he was in a position of authority over the fifteen-year-old girl in the case.
Documents obtained by Newschannel 3 say that Valkema had sex with the girl on multiple occasions at Volkema’s house on Franklin Street in Grand Rapids. The girl told officers it happened every Friday and Saturday from April 13th until the beginning of June. The case came to light after the student reported the sexual relationship to a summer camp counselor.

Dance coach charged with embezzling from own team
Dance coach charged with embezzling from own team.
Volunteer coach purloined over $20,000 of the self-supporting team’s money.
“The dance team is not considered a varsity sport and functions as a club sport with Campus Recreation and Wright coached on a volunteer basis,” said Laura Karps, assistant director of marketing for campus recreation.
“All club coaches are volunteers so she was never employed by the University,” Karps said. “Club sports receive very little funding from the University, requiring the team to be almost entirely self-sufficient, raising all funds on their own.”
“The sad part is that these students are out there running all this on their own because they get limited funding from the University and now someone’s come in and taken the money they spent their hard time and energy raising,” Karps said.
“The filched funds were discovered after the team treasurer noticed inconsistencies in the team’s bank account,” Karps said. “Club teams are student run and managed, and currently are not required to give a copy of bank statements to the club sport’s director.”
“We are looking into new policies so we can deter this from happening in the future… right now clubs are student run, student lead. We [Campus Recreation] just offer assistance, and answer questions,” Karps said.
Keith Nichols, director of news services, said he is not sure how the money was used but the investigation is ongoing.
“Exactly what was done with the money and how she purloined it are not known as the case is still under investigation,” said Nichols. “I assume there won’t be a lot of details until the investigation is complete.”
Kimberly Susen, junior in middle grades education, has a friend on the dance team and knows how dedicated and hard working the dancers are.
“A friend of mine is on the dance team and I know she puts a lot of effort and money into the team, they have to pay for a lot of things. It’s really terrible that someone they are supposed to trust would take from them like that,” Susen said.
According to the team’s website, they have been active 17 years and perform at all home football games, men’s and women’s basketball games, gymnastic meets and select baseball games. They also perform at pep rallies, parades, alumni events and many community and charity events.

HS Coach/Teacher, 36, Accused of Having Sex With Boy, 17, for Past Year
A former Pleasant Ridge High School teacher has been charged with having sexual relations with a student, a prosecution official said. Shannon Young, 36, Lansing, has been charged with three counts of unlawful sexual relations. She was arrested on a warrant Tuesday, according to County Attorney Todd Thompson. Young allegedly had consensual sexual relations with a 17-year-old boy. The crimes are alleged to have occurred between Aug. 1 and June 2.
The boy identified as the victim was of the legal age of consent for Kansas. But teachers are still prohibited by law from having sexual relations with students at their schools. She submitted her resignation in April which was to be effective at the end of the school year, according to Easton Superintendent Charles Coblentz.
Here’s more from the Leavenworth Times.

American Legion Baseball Team Affected by Coach's Arrest
Baseball Team Affected by Coach's Arrest
The case against a baseball coach accused of having sex with a teenage girl is affecting more than just the alleged victim.
A baseball team in Lackawanna County is scrambling now to come up with money for a trip after their coach was jailed on child sex charges and a real estate company where the suspect worked is in on the investigation.
Now that Phil Godlewski is in jail on statutory rape charges, Taylor's American Legion baseball team is out thousands of dollars.
Assistant coach A.J. Meranti said the team is now scrambling. The team of 15 to 18 year olds leaves for a tournament in Myrtle Beach this Friday and they've had less than a week to raise the money all over again through a weekend collection.
"His account's on lock now, because it's all under his name, so what we're trying to do is raise our own money," Meranti explained.
Godlewski, 27, was their head coach. He was arrested on Friday, accused of having a sexual relationship with a teenage girl.
Investigators said the two met when the girl was 14. She is now 16 years old.

Youth Baseball team coach hits son after he was ejected from the game
Youth Baseball team coach hits son after he was ejected from the game
Monday, July 12, 2010 10:39:51 AM by Aishwarya Bhatt
Harrisburg, July 12 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A youth baseball team coach in Pennsylvania was charged with assault after he punched a player, who was his own son, for being ejected from a game.
The coach - Raymond John Boudreau, however maintains that it is not as it has been made to seem. The 47-year-old coach never actually did wanted to harm his son with that ‘little’ punch.
But the police maintain that Boudreau must be made to face the charge of simple assault because he did hit his 9-year-old son twice in the face.
The attorney of Boudreau however maintains that the coach never hit his son in the face with his closed fist, even though he admits that his client did actually hit his son in the back. He said that, “Ray disagrees with what the witnesses saw. He did not strike his son in the face with a closed fist twice. But he agrees that he struck him in the back.”
However the eyewitnesses said that the coach had hit his son in the face twice with a closed fist. This was during a game for an all-star team. But officials of the minor league baseball declined to comment of the issue.

Cheating Coach Caught On Camera (Pic)0
Cheating Coach Caught On Camera (Pic)0
SaveThere was nothing standing between Western safety Jessica Lucarelli and a touchdown, as she intercepted a pass from the Stranahan quarterback and raced towards the end zone during a scoreless high school flag football game. She thought she was about to break the tie and send her team into the District 22 title game, but Stranahan coach Bennett Wyche had other plans.
With defeat staring last season's Sun Sentinel Coach of the Year in the face, he did the only thing he thought he could do; reach out and pull Jessica's flag. Unfortunately, his actions could not escape the eyes of the referee, or the lens of this spectators camera.

Former Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez arrested
Former Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez arrested
NEWARK, N.J. -- Former Seton Hall basketball coach Bobby Gonzalez is in trouble again.
Fired in March for his antics on and off the court, Gonzalez has been arrested on charges of shoplifting from a New Jersey mall.
Gonzalez, 47, reported to Millburn police headquarters on Monday. He faces charges of criminal mischief, along with shoplifting. He is accused of taking a satchel worth roughly $1,400 from the Polo Ralph Lauren store in the Short Hills Mall on June 29.
Ousted Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez was arrested on charges of shoplifting from a N.J. mall.
He plans to plead not guilty, said defense attorney Gerald Krovatin, who also is representing Gonzalez in a lawsuit over his dismissal. He called the accusations a miscommunication and a series of misunderstandings.
"Bobby had no intention of stealing anything," Krovatin said Tuesday in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.
A spokeswoman for the Essex County prosecutor's office says the shoplifting charge is a third-degree offense punishable by up to five years in jail.

Cheerleading coach charged with sex crime
Cheerleading coach charged with sex crime
Gabriel Falcon
AC360° Writer
An English teacher and cheerleading coach at an Arizona high school has been arrested for having an illicit relationship with a student, police said.
Christie Elliot, 25, was charged with luring a minor for sexual exploitation and sexual conduct with a minor.
According to the Tucson Police Department, Elliot had inappropriate physical contact with a child at Empire High School. Authorities said the child was one of her students, but would not divulge the gender or age of the alleged victim.
Elliot was arrested after the child’s parent found disturbing messages on the student’s cell phone, police said. “The parent reported the messages to the school because they believed the messages were from the child’s English teacher who is also the cheerleading coach,” the police added.
After interviewing the student and Elliot, investigators determined that a crime of a sexual nature had been committed.
“This case illustrates the parental vigilance that is needed to keep parents aware of what is happening in their children’s lives,” the police said.
Calvin Baker, the Vail School District Superintendent, told CNN Elliot was directed to have no further contact with students after the allegations surfaced.
“Once the police concluded their investigation, we judged there was sufficient evidence to make the decision that she would not be coming back to a classroom in the school district,” Baker said. “She was on a temporary non-renewing contract so it wasn’t necessary for us to terminate her employment. She simply has not and will not be offered a contact for next year.”
Attempts to contact an attorney for Elliot were not successful.

Former North Allegheny softball coach charged with 'upskirt' photo
By Tom Fontaine
PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Wednesday, June 30, 2010
A former North Allegheny girls' softball coach surrendered to authorities Tuesday on charges of using a cell phone camera to snap a photo under a teenage girl's skirt at Philadelphia International Airport.
A spokeswoman for the Philadelphia District Attorney's office said police there charged Joseph Pereira, 55, a US Airways pilot from Franklin Park, with a misdemeanor count of invasion of privacy and a summary count of harassment.
Authorities said a witness alerted police after seeing Pereira snap the photo Thursday at an airport gift shop. The girl is 15.
Pereira declined comment when reached by phone. He referred questions to his attorney, Brian McMonagle of Philadelphia, who did not return a message.
When asked about Pereira's employment status, US Airways issued a statement saying only it "suspended a pilot that was detained at Philadelphia International Airport pending the outcome of an investigation."
North Allegheny spokeswoman Joy Ed said Pereira voluntarily resigned Sunday as a softball coach in the district. He recently completed his second season as co-head coach, leading the Lady Tigers to a 14-7 record and an appearance in the WPIAL playoffs. He was paid $4,276 this past season. He worked as an assistant for 13 seasons.
Ed said the district never received complaints during Pereira's tenure about improper behavior.
Parents of current and former softball players were stunned.
"No red flags went up," said Shannon Briskey of Marshall, whose daughter, Ashley, was a junior last season.
"(Pereira) never gave me any indication that anything was out of the ordinary. He was no different than any other coach I'd been around, coach-to-parent-wise and coach-to-player-wise."
Nicole Shevchik of Franklin Park, whose daughter Maria is now a freshman at Penn State, said she was "in utter shock."
"I'm sadly disappointed if the allegations are true. I just don't even know what to think. I never had any inkling that something like this would happen," she said.

Kings assistant Mark Hardy arrested for alleged sexual abuse

Crazy, developing story out of Washington D.C. on Friday. Former NHL defenseman and current Los Angeles Kings assistant coach Mark Hardy was arrested Friday morning for allegedly sexually abusing a woman in her 20's at the Mayflower Hotel. TMZ is reporting that the woman who filed the complaint is Hardy's 21-year-old daughter.
Hardy will face a judge Friday on the charge of misdemeanor sexual abuse.
Pressed for comment, the Kings released the following statement on the matter:
We are aware of the charge. Due to the legal nature of this matter, we will not have any additional comments at this time.
A 15-year NHL veteran, Hardy played with the Kings, Minnesota North Stars and New York Rangers, and has been an assistant coach with the team since the 1999-00 season with a stop in Chicago in-between.
UPDATE: NBC Washington has more information:

At a Superior Court hearing, Hardy was ordered to stay away from the relative both in D.C. and L.A. He will be released on his own recognizance."

Union City youth baseball coach is suspended for year
Union City youth baseball coach is suspended for year after incident with umpire leads to arrest on fourth-degree assault charge
Saturday, June 26, 2010
By KARINA L. ARRUE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER
UNION CITY - A Union City coach was arrested last week after he tried to attack an umpire, officials said.
Jose Polanco, 43, of Bergenline Avenue, was reportedly ejected from a June 18 Cal Ripken Baseball League championship game at Washington Park on Second Street after cursing and threatening an umpire because he didn't agree with a call the umpire made, reports said.
Forty-five minutes later, at approximately 9:30 p.m., when the game was over, Polanco reportedly lunged at the umpire and attempted to punch him.
The umpire, Joe McSorely, 37, says it's not the first time Polanco has tried to attack someone, which is why he signed a complaint against him, he said.
"He should never be able to coach a kid again," said McSorely, an umpire with Union City for the last four years.
Polanco was later arrested on charges of simple assault in the fourth degree and released, reports said.
McSorely, a resident of Woodbridge, said he was summoned on Monday by Richie Casseins, president of the Babe Ruth and Cal Ripken leagues, and by umpire chief Guy McCann, at the behest of Department of Parks and Public Property Commissioner Christopher Irizarry, to try to convince him to drop the charges.
"They asked what I felt would be a sufficient enough punishment that would make me not go to court," McSorely said.
"I find it absolutely outlandish, first as a parent, secondly as an umpire, and third as a coach, that anybody with children, especially the commissioner of the Department of Recreation . would even entertain consideration that Polanco should be treated as the victim in this situation," McSorely said, adding that he won't umpire in Union City anymore.
Irizarry denies that he ever made such a request.
According to McCann, Polanco has been suspended from coaching for the league for a year, and will remain on probation for two years.
"There is no justification for what (Polanco) did," McCann said. "I'm backing my umpire 100 percent. He didn't do anything wrong."
Casseins declined to comment.

Little League coach charged with assault in punch-out after umpire's call
An Ohio Little League coach has been charged with felonious assault for allegedly punching the local league president at a baseball game following a dispute over an umpire's call, WKYC-TV reports.
Canton Little League President Shawn Thomas tells WKYC that Karim Carter, 41, "sucker-punched" him and left him with two chipped teeth and a sore jaw in the scuffle in Canton, Ohio.
Thomas said he had been trying to calm Carter after the coach and a fan were ejected from a game for arguing over a umpire's call.
At the arraignment, the judge expressed surprise that Carter, who has a lengthy criminal record, including two assaults, firearm in a motor vehicle, domestic violence and disorderly conduct by intoxication, was allowed to coach, WKYC reports.
Thomas says the league was aware of Carter's criminal record, but had overlooked it because none of the incidents involved children.

Coach Attacks Teen Football Player
36-Year-Old Faces Child-Abuse Charges
An assistant football coach in Stockton, Calif., is accused of rushing the field and attacking a football player on a rival team.
Brian Wood, 13, sustained sprained fingers, a sore shoulder, and lingering headaches from the attack.
(ABC News)With just a minute left in the game, observers say 13-year-old, 116-pound Brian Wood made a late hit, prompting the referee to call a penalty.
Then, Cory Petero, 36, the assistant coach of the rival team and father of the boy who had taken the hit, tackled Wood.
"I got up to go to the huddle, and I was about to take off my helmet, had my straps off, and then he just came out of nowhere and hit me from behind," Wood said. "Then he rushed me again, and my big brother came up and then there was just a big old brawl out there."
Facing Charges
That brawl, not caught on camera, lasted 20 minutes. The fight left Wood with sprained fingers, a sore shoulder, and lingering headaches.
Petero faces a charge of felony child abuse that could put him behind bars for six years.
"I hope he goes to jail for what he did. You see late calls called. You see it all the time," said Denise Moreno, Wood's mother. "It doesn't mean that people are out on the field beating each other up. It's just not right."
Coaching experts agreed.
"I don't care what the frustration level was or what precipitated it," one expert said. "It's just not appropriate."
"The bottom line is that one of these incidents is one too many because it's traumatizing kids," the expert said.
"What it all boils down to: An adult ran out on the field and hit a child, period," Moreno said. "People need to understand that. It's not right, no matter what."

Youth Baseball Coach Arrested for Attacking Umpire
About the only good thing we can say about this incident is that at least it happened during a championship game and not a regular T-ball game between 5-year-olds. Still, not a good example to set for the kids there fella.
